The film tells the story of a group of high school students who were instead destined to die at a school bus that crashes into a concrete overpass while they are taking a shortcut on their way home from school. The film was directed by James Wong. It was released on June 19, 2006, and grossed over $175 million worldwide. A sequel was announced by M. Night Shyamalan during the end credits of Final Destination 5 on March 24, 2005. At the time, he said that "we are actually working on that script!" On June 14, 2007 at Comic-Con International 2007 in San Diego, it was announced that Final Destination 6 would be released in Summer 2008 and Final Destination 7 would be released in summer 2009; however, there were no further announcements before the release of Final Destinations 4 and 5. M. Night Shyamalan announced in an interview with IGN that the film would be the third in the series to take place outside of America. The first two films were set in New York City and Tokyo, respectively. The film's working title is "Final Destination Paris". In September 2008, director James Wong said that he had begun writing a script for Final Destination 6, which would be set mainly in Paris. He also said that he hoped to shoot parts of it on location.. "We're actually talking about doing it now. There's a city where I've never done any films before...I'm trying to think of the name right now...Paris. That. I think we'll do a good chunk of it there." In May 2009, Wong revealed that he had finished a script for the sequel starring the original Final Destination cast. In September 2009, David R. Ellis was hired to write a script which would be based on a story by Shyamalan, trying to bring back Spencer as the lead character after six years. It was later confirmed that Shawnee Smith had been cast as the leading female role of Katherine Neville, with Jesse McCartney as Joel Barrish, who would work on new gadgets for death machines for this installment.
