The Darkstorm viewer is a Viewer for Google Earth created by L. Elliot Briar, being the world's first 3D globe viewer for Google Earth. It allows users to zoom in on any location or to view the entire planet. It displays information about the current time, weather, and terrain in amazing detail through realtime maps that are are interactive even when not using it. The app is completely open source and being developed by an active community of viewers since 2007 with support from NASA JPL's chase team. Darkstorm was developed by L. Elliot Briar as a proof-of-concept to see if it was possible to display high quality 3D models of terrain data in Google Earth. As a result of this experiment, a fully functioning 3D globe viewer was created that has the ability to display all the issues normally associated with using Google Earth as an application for viewing terrain data. After extensive beta testing, Darkstorm's first public release was released on January 10, 2007. Darkstorm is built upon its own 3D engine which uses OpenGL as its graphics interface to render the terrain models and other visual aspects of the application. Although Google has now developed its own 3D globe, this is built upon the same technology as Darkstorm with the exception that it does not have access to terrain data. Darkstorm however can load DTED files (digital terrain elevation data) making it more interactive than Google Earth's globe. On January 10, 2007, the first public version of Darkstorm was released. This was possible because of work by NASA JPL's chase team to develop an application known as VectorGlobe 2. This allowed Darkstorm to use vector tiles which allowed for seamless zooming and panning of the globe without any lag at all. On January 23, 2009, Darkstorm 0.6 was released with support for .DEM files (digital elevation models). This means that Darkstorm can now display DTEDs (digital terrain elevation data) which are the same format that Google Earth uses to display terrain data. The latest version of Darkstorm is 0.8 Alpha RC1 released on June 29, 2010. It features true 3D terrain and clouds, an updated vector tile loader engine, improved configuration options and more efficient rendering by using Vertex Arrays in OpenGL 2.0. It also added support for third party plugins which are being actively developed by the community members of the project. On May 23, 2007, Darkstorm received an award from Google for being the first 3D globe viewer for Google Earth. This was issued during the Geo Developers Day at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California. "Features:"Prior to version 0.8 of Darkstorm, these features were not present in the source code, however they are implemented in v0.8 Alpha RC1. cfa1e77820
